Rare UK market F2 Super Sport
model; restored by our vendor in 2010 and kept in storage since; in need of
light recommissioning
The Honda CB400F (commonly known as the 400/4)
was in production from 1975 to 1977 although an F2 Super Sport was also made for
the UK market only in 1978. Available in just two colours, Candy Antares Red or
Parakeet Yellow, the F2 had a 408cc inline-four, four-stroke engine
with two valves per cylinder, a chain-driven overhead camshaft and quad Keihin
carbs.
Producing around 38bhp it had a six-speed
gearbox (a first for Honda) which gave it a top speed of 105mph, and while it
did not quite have the acceleration of Kawasaki’s two-stroke triples, the CB400F
made up for this in refinement and economy. It also had a distinctive
four-into-one exhaust system for that essential ‘café racer’ look.
First registered in January 1978, this
particular CB400F2 Super Sport is finished in Parakeet Yellow and shows 36,762
miles on the clock which is said to be correct. Our vendor, a professional car
mechanic, acquired the bike in October 2010 and stripped it right down to a bare
frame as a project to keep him out of mischief in his spare time.
Although there are no invoices to show exactly
what work was carried out, we are told that it included having the frame
professionally bead blasted and powder coated. It was then reassembled and
treated to a thorough mechanical service/overhaul and the fuel tank and side
panels were repainted.
It was then put into
storage and has not been ridden since, although we are told that it has been
started and moved regularly to keep everything free, being last fired up in
December 2025.
As you can see in the photos, it
has deteriorated somewhat over the past 16 years in storage and would benefit
from a thorough cleaning and recommissioning before being put back into use once
more.
