Restored by
our vendor, a professional mechanic, in 2014; kept in storage since; in need of
light recommissioning
In production from
1975 – 1977, the Honda CB400F was a popular sports bike in period, being widely
praised by the press for its mechanical refinement and sporty café racer
looks.
Marketed as the 400 Super Sport, it had a
38hp inline-four 408cc engine which revved freely up to its 10,000rpm redline.
Mated to a six-speed gearbox (most unusual at the time), it was good for a top
speed of 105mph. Only available in two colours, Light Ruby Red or Varnish Blue,
its distinguishing feature was the four-into-one ‘waterfall’ exhaust system
which enhanced its sporting looks.
First
registered in August 1976, this particular CB400F Super Sport is finished in
Light Ruby Red and shows 36,637 miles on the clock which is said to be correct.
Our vendor, a professional car mechanic, acquired the bike in April 2014 and stripped it right down to a bare
frame as a project to keep him out of mischief in his spare time.
Although there are no invoices to show exactly
what work was carried out, we are told that it included having the frame
professionally bead blasted and powder coated. It was then reassembled and
treated to a thorough mechanical service/overhaul and the fuel tank and side
panels were repainted.
It was then put into
storage and has not been ridden since, although we are told that it has been
started and moved regularly to keep everything free, being last fired up in
December 2025.
As you can see in the photos, it
has deteriorated somewhat over the past dozen years in storage and would benefit
from a new seat cover, thorough cleaning and recommissioning before being put
back into use once more.
