Rare and appealing example of the 101 Forward
Control; restored well beyond typical ex-MOD condition; hot-dip galvanized chassis; extensive
and carefully executed restoration; fabulous go-anywhere fully equipped camper;
showing 11,625 miles
First registered in 1983, this Land Rover 101
Forward Control began life as an ambulance with the British military, later
entering civilian hands before undergoing an extensive and carefully executed
restoration between 2021 and 2024. Now registered as a Historic Vehicle (July
2024), it presents as a fully reworked and sympathetically converted
2-berth motorhome, retaining its
original character while benefiting from a comprehensive mechanical and
structural overhaul.
The work commenced with a complete
strip-down of the base vehicle. The
chassis was refurbished, hot-dip galvanised and finished in
chassis black, providing a sound foundation for future decades of use. The
original 3.5-litre Rover V8 and drivetrain have
been retained and fully serviced, showing 11,625 miles, with a new cooling
system fitted including radiator, hoses and cab heating. The braking system is
entirely renewed with fresh drums, pads, cylinders and pipework, while the
electrical system has been rewired throughout.
The cab has been upgraded with Land Rover
Defender seating, new dash panels and USB charging points. New cab doors and
windscreen have been fitted, along with new glass throughout the vehicle. The
ambulance body was cleaned, sealed and repainted internally, with the rear doors
rebuilt using stainless steel piano hinges. Externally, the bodywork has been
professionally resprayed, giving the vehicle a crisp and purposeful appearance.
An underslung spare wheel with winch has also been added.
The motorhome conversion has been
carried out to a high standard, with Dodo thermal and acoustic insulation
throughout the living space and an external solar panel to support
off-grid capability. A bespoke aluminium
pop-up roof, designed to complement the
vehicle’s original lines, provides valuable
headroom. Inside, oak-deck style flooring sets the tone
for a neatly executed interior featuring a wraparound seating area that converts
into a full double bed.
The kitchen area is equipped with a SMEV 9722
hob/sink combination unit, Dometic CRX-50 12V fridge and grey cabinetry
with contrasting red worktops. Heating and hot water are supplied by a Truma
system, featuring an outdoor shower connection. While electrical management is
handled by a CBE PC380 unit covering 12V, 230V and split-charging functions. An underslung
gas cylinder, LED lighting and electric hook-up point complete the
installation.
Externally, the vehicle benefits from an
expedition-style fold-out awning in yellow canvas with
side walls, forward-mounted access ladders, a roof rack
with four storage containers and a foldaway rear step. A Fusion MS-RA210 stereo system provides
entertainment when required. The paperwork includes the current V5C, 5 old
MOT certificates, wiring diagrams and a selection of
magazines.
The result is a rare and appealing example of
the 101 Forward Control, restored well beyond typical ex-MOD condition and now offering a
distinctive, capable and characterful motorhome conversion. A striking machine,
ready for shows, touring or simply enjoying as one of Land Rover’s most charismatic military
designs.
