Highly
appealing and eminently usable; benefited from considerable cosmetic and
mechanical attention; known to the Alvis Register; has enjoyed long-term single family ownership from
1971 until 2018
Introduced in August 1923,
the Alvis 12/50 was the model that firmly established the young Coventry firm’s
reputation, its development driven relentlessly by Chief Engineer Capt. G.T.
Smith-Clarke.
Offering exceptional roadholding and lively performance for
its class, the 12/50 quickly became one of the defining British sports cars of
the Vintage era. Briefly dropped in 1929 when Alvis focused on its pioneering
front-wheel-drive programme, the 12/50 was hastily reinstated in September 1930
and is widely credited with rescuing the company’s fortunes.
Built upon a
notably robust 9ft 4½in wheelbase chassis with semi-elliptic suspension,
cable-operated drum brakes and high-geared steering, it was powered by a
free-revving 1645cc OHV four-cylinder engine driving through a right-hand-change
four-speed gearbox. Capable of 75–80mph in period, the 12/50 remains admired for
its ruggedness, versatility and sheer character.
Chassis number 9771 began life as a Carbodies Atlantic Saloon and was
first registered by Manchester Council on 29th July 1932. Although little is
known of its earliest years, we understand it had a brief conversion to an open
tourer form during the 1960s. We understand it was acquired by Michael Jacklin
Esq. of Louth in June 1971—by which time it had reverted to saloon
configuration—the car remained in his family ownership until February 2018.
Changing hands again in 2019, it was taken to Jersey where it remained until
being sold to our vendor.
In approx. 2018/2019,
XJ 2151 was treated to a
bare-metal repaint, stainless steel exhaust system, complete rewiring,
refurbished ignition, new carpets and replacement rear springs, resulting in an
extremely smart and presentable example of this enduringly charismatic Alvis.
The car is currenly registered with the DVLA on XJ2151, although
there is no V5C on file so a replacement will need to be applied
for.
Seemed to drive around our yard with no issues and sounded very
smooth with good oil pressure.
