Description
Believed to have been owned by the grandson of Percy Riley;
considerable rebuilt between 1984 and 1984; owned by our vendor for the last 24

During the late 1920s and
early 1930s, Riley established itself as one of Britain's finest manufacturers
of small sporting cars. Combining advanced engineering with elegant styling and
superb road manners, the Coventry firm produced an enviable range of saloons,
tourers and sports cars that remain highly sought after
today.
At the heart of the Riley Nine was Percy
Riley's innovative 1,087cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine, an advanced design for
its day that offered lively performance, a 60mph cruising capability and
impressive economy. Complementing this was Stanley Riley's beautifully
engineered chassis, renowned for its excellent handling and balance. In 1932,
Riley introduced the improved 'Plus Ultra' chassis, which was stiffer, lower and
more spacious than its predecessor, further enhancing the driving
experience.
This delightful 1933 Riley Nine Lynx
Tourer, registration FV 3424, is believed to have been owned at one time by
Percy Riley's grandson, adding an intriguing chapter to its history. We
understand the car underwent a comprehensive restoration between 1981 and 1984,
resulting in the attractive example offered today.
Finished in dark green with contrasting red wire wheels and a
beautifully trimmed red leather interior, the Riley presents well. The bodywork
is certainly not concours but understandable shows some wear and tear of being
93 years old! The engine bay is clean and nicely detailed, while the recent
black hood canvas, matching tonneau cover and complete wet weather side screens
ensure it is equally suited to touring as it is to show use.
The current vendor has cherished the Riley for the past 24 years,
covering fewer than 1,500 miles during that time and using it only sparingly for
vintage events. Having owned the car since 2002, he has carried out some
sympathetic recommissioning, including attention to the magneto, carburettors
and radiator. It has also received new tyres, new hood canvas, new tonneau
cover, new carpets, a refurbished steering wheel and a silencer fitted to the
exhaust, more recently a fresh battery and fuel in readiness for the
auction.
With its believed Riley family
connection, long-term ownership, extensive restoration history and tasteful
recent improvements, this charming Lynx Tourer represents a wonderful
opportunity to acquire one of the finest British sporting tourers of the pre-war
era. Equally at home on VSCC events, local rallies or simply enjoying leisurely
country drives, it is an elegant and highly usable example of Riley's golden
age.
