Offered
here is a 1989 Porsche 944, a model widely regarded as one of the most finely
balanced and rewarding sports cars of its generation. Developed as the successor
to the 924, the 944 earned widespread acclaim for its near-perfect weight
distribution, precise steering, and robust engineering—qualities that continue
to make it an engaging and highly usable classic today.
This particular example boasts a remarkable ownership history, having
remained with its current keeper for an impressive 31 years. Acquired in 1992,
it has served faithfully as a daily driver throughout that time, a testament
both to the model's renowned durability and to the attentive care it has
received. Over the course of the vendor's ownership, in excess of £40,000 has
reportedly been invested in the car, ensuring it has been maintained to a high
standard throughout its life. Now displaying 247,132 recorded miles, the car
continues to perform impressively, with the engine pulling strongly and the
steering and gearbox retaining the directness and feedback for which the 944 is
celebrated.
At approximately 212,000 miles in
2011, the car benefited from the installation of a replacement engine sourced
through Porsche Parts, which had covered just 66,000 kilometres at the time. The
work was undertaken by Moss Motors, with supporting invoices included within the
comprehensive history file. The replacement engine has since covered
approximately 80,000 miles and is reported by the vendor to perform
exceptionally well. At the same time, a new clutch was fitted, while subsequent
maintenance has included replacement brakes and discs.
Further significant investment followed in 2017, when approximately
£10,000 was spent on a comprehensive recommissioning programme. This included
extensive mechanical work together with a full respray in the car's original
white, carried out by respected Porsche specialists, 928 Spares. The paintwork
continues to present well, retaining a bright and attractive finish, although
corrosion is now evident to the sills and wheel arches, consistent with the
car's age and regular use.
The accompanying
history file is extensive, documenting decades of conscientious servicing and
maintenance, and reflecting careful long-term ownership. Additional equipment
includes a Driscoll immobiliser, while the car is supplied with its original
handbooks and two sets of keys.
Demonstrating its
continued usability, the Porsche recently completed a road trip of more than 400
miles without issue, further reinforcing the vendor's confidence in its
mechanical condition. At the time of inspection, the car was reported to start
readily, drive well, and stop as expected. The bodywork remains presentable
overall, with the noted corrosion confined primarily to the lower sections.
Addressing these cosmetic areas would further enhance what is already an honest
and highly usable example.
Altogether, this 1989
Porsche 944 represents an appealing opportunity to acquire a genuinely
well-maintained and extensively documented example of one of Porsche's most
respected transaxle models. Benefiting from exceptional long-term ownership,
substantial documented expenditure exceeding £40,000, and a replacement engine
installed regardless of cost, it offers its next custodian the chance to enjoy a
charismatic and rewarding classic that has already proven its ability to cover
significant distances with confidence.
