Exceedingly rare 'Exclusive' edition of Opel's Manta GT/E; fresh from
a comprehensive restoration including full repaint; top spec run-out
edition; all 'Exclusive' options present and correct; advisory free MOT until
April 2027; very rare opportunity, find another one
The Opel Manta GT/E represents the ultimate evolution of Opel’s
stylish rear-wheel-drive coupé. With its fuel-injected engine, uprated
suspension, and sporting intent, the GT/E established itself as the performance
flagship of the Manta range, offering a distinctly engaging driving experience
in a practical and well-balanced package.
At the
very top of the hierarchy sat the rare and highly sought-after ‘Exclusive’
model, produced in limited numbers as a run-out version of the Manta B.
Instantly recognisable by its distinctive styling and enhanced specification,
the Exclusive featured unique alloy wheels, colour-coded bodywork, and a more
refined interior. These final-edition cars combined the GT/E’s proven
mechanicals with a higher level of comfort and visual presence and are now
widely regarded as among the most collectible and desirable Mantas
produced.
This particular example was
manufactured in 1987 and has just arrived fresh from a comprehensive
restoration, including a full repaint in the correct ‘Glacier White’. The car
has only had four previous keepers including our vendor who has undertaken much
of the restoration work himself.
The previous owners had kept the car for a remarkable 14 and 23 years
respectively suggesting it was a much-loved example.
The car is accompanied with its original bill of sale and was
supplied new by Henly’s of Croydon for the grand total of £8,430 to a Mr. L.
Gough who spent a further £623 for an extended two-year warranty and optional
electric aerial and remote door opener. The car stayed in his ownership for over
14 years suggesting this was a truly special and cherished example.
Like all Exclusive’s, the car retains its model
specific quad headlamps, Irmscher body kit, genuine Irmscher five-spoke alloys,
sunroof, red piped Recaro seats and Irmscher steering wheel. All setting it
apart from a standard car and instantly recognisable. Reassuringly,
documentation confirms the car crucially still retains its original engine all
adding to its provenance.
Our vendor informs us
that ‘Every nut and bolt has been changed underneath’ with the underside
completely stripped back, epoxy primed, and treated before being painted in the
correct white. All new suspension components have been fitted with brand new
Bilstein shock absorbers and sports springs.
The
engine has also been treated to all new fluids, gaskets, thermostat, and water
pump, reinforced by a brand-new alloy radiator to increase cooling. A brand-new
clutch, cable, fuel lines, and fuel tank were fitted as well as new brake lines
and refurbished front callipers.
Finally, the car
was treated to a full respray in its original Glacier White with all glass and
trim removed, including the door shuts, boot, and engine bay. Our vendor informs
us that the car has been garaged in his care and presents very well. He also
believes the indicated 41,530 miles to be genuine. This cannot be warranted but
the cars long ownership history does suggest this was a particularly cherished
example.
Having recently passed its MOT with no
advisories and being valid until April 2027, this very rare special edition 80’s
sports coupe presents an excellent opportunity to acquire a very collectable
car. With low and long ownership, evidence of comprehensive work, and a clean
bill of health from the MOT testers this appears a particularly unique example
with all the correct parts. With similar cars having recently sold at auction in
the early thirties, the car appears keenly estimated too.
