Pre-War Austin 10/4
Litchfield “Sunshine Saloon”; seven former keepers; black with a dark blue
interior; imported in 1981; radiator and cooling system have been overhauled in
previous years
A charming and increasingly
sought-after example of Austin’s dependable pre-war motoring range, this 1936
Austin 10/4 Litchfield “Sunshine Saloon” presents as a well-preserved and
sensibly improved vintage tourer, benefitting from both sympathetic restoration
work and long-term care.
Powered by the robust 1,125cc
four-cylinder engine, the Austin 10/4 embodies the marque’s reputation for
reliability and simplicity. Featuring a strengthened ladder chassis and 12-volt
electrics (upgraded from the earlier 6-volt system), the model offered improved
usability while retaining its unmistakable 1930s character. The
Litchfield-bodied saloon remains one of the more elegant iterations, combining
practicality with period style.
This particular example has
had 7 former keepers and was previously resident overseas before being
repatriated in 1981. Its time abroad is believed to have contributed positively
to its preservation, and the car has since benefited from ongoing maintenance
and restoration attention.
Finished in black with a dark
blue interior, the vehicle presents well throughout. The paintwork is described
as being in good overall condition, while the interior is notably smart and
well-kept. A fitted rear roller blind complements the cabin, and all
instrumentation and controls are understood to remain original, preserving the
authenticity of the driving experience.
Mechanically, the Austin is
reported to be in strong working order with no known faults. The radiator and
cooling system have been overhauled in previous years, and the car is fitted
with thoughtful period-sensible upgrades including a battery master switch and
flasher indicators for improved usability in modern
traffic.
Included with the vehicle is a
history file documenting various works undertaken over the years, supporting its
well-maintained provenance.
On inspection, the Austin
starts readily, runs smoothly, and performs as expected, having demonstrated
reliable starting and stopping during on-site photography and video capture.
Overall, this is a highly usable and engaging pre-war saloon, offering an
authentic driving experience with the reassurance of careful long-term
stewardship.
A delightful opportunity to
acquire a well-presented and sympathetically improved example of Austin’s
enduring 10/4 Litchfield.
