When Reliant introduced the Scimitar
SS1 in the mid-1980s, it set out to revive the
spirit of the small British sports car for a new generation. Designed by
Michelotti and built around a galvanised steel chassis with a lightweight
composite body, the SS1 offered sharp handling, low running costs and a
refreshingly simple mechanical layout. With relatively few built and even fewer
surviving in good order, they have become an increasingly interesting and
distinctive choice among enthusiasts of quirky British
classics.
Finished in white with a black soft top, this
1986 example is powered by the lively 1,596cc petrol engine and shows only
42,239 miles, a notably low figure for a car now approaching four decades old.
The V5C is present, and the current MOT runs until January
2027.
It comes
with an unusually comprehensive history file, including 18 old MOT certificates,
the handbook, owners’ handbook, parts list, and a selection of invoices
documenting maintenance and care over the years — exactly the sort of provenance
that inspires confidence in these increasingly uncommon cars.
