Garage find; featherweight
chassis with a smooth, tractable 171cc two-stroke
engine
Launched in 1975, the Yamaha
TY175 quickly became one of the defining trials bikes of its era. Developed with
input from trials maestro Mick Andrews, it combined a featherweight chassis with
a smooth, tractable 171cc two-stroke engine that
delivered exactly the sort of low-end torque and
finesse required for observed trials. Its reliability, simplicity and forgiving
nature made it a favorite with club riders and newcomers alike, and its long
production run — with very few changes — stands as proof of how right Yamaha
got the formula. Today, the TY175 remains a cornerstone of classic trials
riding, supported by an enthusiastic community and excellent parts
availability.
Discovered tucked away at the
back of a domestic garage where it has spent the last decade in quiet
retirement, this Yamaha TY175 presents as a wonderfully honest and unspoilt
example of Yamaha’s much-loved
twin-shock trials
machine.
Not a contrived “barn find” but a genuine
long-term sleeper, it
shows all the hallmarks of careful storage rather than neglect: a light bloom of
surface corrosion here and there, dulled alloy, and the sort of dust that only
accumulates when a machine has been left undisturbed for
years.
Offered strictly as seen and
not currently running, this garage-fresh example
represents an ideal basis for either a sympathetic recommissioning or a full
restoration. With its originality, completeness and charmingly
time-worn appearance, it
offers all the appeal of a true period machine waiting patiently for its next
chapter.
