A descendant of
the legendary 2000GT of the Sixties, the Supra was launched in 1978 as the
sporting GT flagship of the Toyota range and just got better as time went
on.
The A70 MkIII version ran from 1986 until
1993 with a potent 200bhp 24v twin-cam 3.0 straight-six up front driving the
rear wheels in proper sportscar fashion, sprinting to 60mph in 6.5 seconds
with a top speed of 138mph. Most cars had 4-speed automatic transmission with
overdrive and switchable Power mode for high rev changes when you want to get a
move on. Naturally Toyota’s famed reliability came as standard and
this bullet-proof engine can cover star ship mileages with
ease.
Being a 1991 example, this black beauty
benefits from all the improvements that were made to the MkIII over the years
and is packed with all the usual top-spec Supra gadgets. The driver-focused
cockpit is analogue heaven with more dials, knobs and switches than a Boeing
747!
Supplied new by Hunnington Motor Co of
Halesowen in August 1991, it was acquired by our vendor (the second owner) in
April 1993 when it had covered 29,800 miles and he has added another 211,800
miles since, the odometer currently showing 241,582 miles. These were virtually
all motorway miles with the cruise control set at 70mph as his job involved
visiting clients across the UK plus a regular commute from Worcester to
Wiltshire.
The service book shows no fewer than
38 stamps, all at Toyota main dealers apart from the last five which were by DNA
of Worcester (Toyota-trained ex-Hylton mechanics), the last service being in
September 2022 since when it has only covered 68 miles. That gives an average
service interval of 6,300 miles.
Dozens of
invoices show meticulous upkeep, stand-out items including:
Laser four-wheel alignment and new handbrake shoes in
2024.
Powatec engine flush in
2022.
New front shocks, rebuilt rear
brake calipers, all four wheels refurbished and full underbody steam clean and
waxoil treatment in 2019.
Collishine paintwork
protection, underbody stonechip protection, rear subframe shot blasted and
powder coated, rear suspension rebuilt with new Superpro bushes
throughout in 2017.
New rear coil
springs and new Dunlop SP Sport rear tyres in 2016 at 239,949
miles.
New braided stainless steel oil
cooler pipes in 2015.
New windscreen in 2013.
New brake discs and pads all round in 2013 at
219,269 miles.
New timing belt and cam
cover gaskets in 2012 at 213,456 miles.
New fuel tank in 2009.
Always garaged
in the current 32-year ownership with regular professional paintwork protection
and underside treatment, this Supra is in remarkable condition for its year and
mileage – if someone told you it had done 40k miles instead of 240k you would
have no reason to doubt them.
Supplied with all its original handbooks and 18 old MOTs, it has a
current MOT until September 2025 with just a couple of minor advisories for
slight play in the rear wheel bearings and slight damage to the n/s front seat
belt. It also has three sets of keys and retains its original toolkit and
wheel-changing kit.
Said to drive as well as it
looks, it has always been run on high-octane super unleaded petrol and
has been starting instantly and driving beautifully as we have hoofed it
around on site, with good oil pressure, no warning lights and bags of
performance. The only real fault we noted were weak bonnet struts so these would
ideally be replaced but are readily available at modest cost.
A glowing testament to Toyota’s legendary build
quality and an absolute credit to its devoted owner, this remarkable Supra is
only reluctantly for sale due to our vendor’s advancing years.
You would be hard-pressed to find a more
cossetted example and we have no doubt that it will still be going strong for
another 200k miles at least. What a machine!
