Description
Former Historic Rally
car built by The Z Farm in 2000 and subsequently rebuilt for fast road use;
current owner 14 years; many choice upgrades; in regular use and driven 200
miles to the sale
Built in August 1970, this 240Z was imported
from America in 1999 and was then restored and specially prepared for Historic
Rallying by The Z Farm of North Yorkshire in 2000, the spec being detailed in
MSA papers on file which included a 2.8 engine with triple Weber carbs.
Our vendor
acquired the car from The Z Farm in 2009 by which time it had been
retired from rallying and rebuilt to make it more civilised for fast road
use and track days, being comfortable enough for long-distance touring and
docile around town.
Although
the V5C still states the L28-209973 engine number and 2,753cc capacity of the
rally car, this has since been replaced by The Z Farm with a correct 2.4
straight-six unit, number L24-160927. This has been uprated with a gas-flowed
big valve head, Samuri spec camshaft, tubular exhaust manifold and twin SU
carbs, dyno sheets showing that it produces 174bhp and 156lb/ft (compared to
150bhp as standard). The gearbox is a 5-speed 280ZX unit driving through an R200
3.7:1 axle.
The
suspension uses uprated Tokico struts with Z Farm performance springs, nylon
bushes on the wishbones and steering rack and C-spanners to adjust the ride
height. Brakes are vented discs with uprated Toyota Hi-Lux 4-pot calipers at the
front. It rides on a set of Enkei 7Jx14 alloys with anthracite powder coating
shod with a matching set of Kumho Ecowing tyres.
On the electrical side it has a scuttle mounted
fuse box; uprated headlamp wiring with relays in live line; Quadoptic lamps and
extra under-bumper spotlamps; electric radiator fan; air horns; modern radio
with USB port; two separate master switches.
The interior features comfortable Recaro seats
with SABELT harnesses, Safety Devices roll hoop, fire extinguisher, rear strut
brace, black carpets with rubber matting. The dashboard is the standard 240Z
unit and has no cracks. A modern Alpine CD/radio is also
fitted.
A good
file of invoices attest to regular upkeep during our vendor’s 14-year ownership,
including a rebuilt gearbox and a new clutch kit in July this year, the work
being done by Fourways Engineering at a cost of £2,300. It also received some
localised chassis repairs to address some MOT issues.
Following an incident at Brands
Hatch in January 2011 which damaged the o/s/f of the car, it went back to The Z
Farm where it was professionally repaired at a cost of £12,927 with many new
parts fitted as detailed in invoices on file. The insurers contributed half
towards the repairs and it is HPI clear.
Our vendor has used the car regularly,
averaging around 3,000 miles a year according to the MOT history, including
several European road trips. He states that it is “a very useable car with easy
starting and moderate fuel consumption of around 26mpg. The engine is not
temperamental and is very flexible with plenty of performance and torque. It is
also ULEZ compliant”.
Driven some 200 miles to the sale, it has an
MOT until September 2024 with no advisories recorded, although it is, of course
now MOT-exempt and free to tax. Starting promptly and running well as we have
moved it around on site, it feels light and lively with good 50+psi oil
pressure.
A
proper old school driver’s car, sensibly modified by the experts at The Z Farm,
this cool 240Z is just the sort of thing that any petrolhead would love to have
in their garage. We like it a lot!
