1962 Triumph TR4

Well-maintained and in regular use; many new parts; overdrive; ready to go

As the Heritage Certificate confirms, this TR4 is an original UK market car that was built in November 1962 and finished in Signal Red with a black Vynide interior and a black hood. Options included overdrive, wire wheels and a heater. Registered as 702 JGT (a transferable number which it retains to this day), it was sold new via LF Dove Ltd of Wimbledon, one of the leading Triumph dealers who also made a bespoke steel-roofed version of the TR4, the GTR4 Dove Coupe.

The previous owner of 702 JGT kept it for 17 years (2004 – 2021), old MOTs showing that it covered some 11,000 miles over this period. There are lots of bills for servicing and new parts during his ownership including: new clutch kit; rear shock absorbers; spin-on oil filter conversion; rebuilt carbs; electronic ignition; rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders; water pump; fuel pump etc. A new set of Continetal tyres were fitted in April 2017 which have now covered some 6,000 miles.

Our vendor acquired the car during lockdown in February 2021 and has improved it still further with the following new parts: timing chain, hub pulley and front crank oil seal; recored radiator; a pair of uprated rear leaf springs; high torque starter motor; rocker cover gasket; brake calipers, pads, shoes and hoses; clutch and slave master cylinder; engine oil and filter; gearbox oil; inertia reel seat belts; heated seats.

There are also some undated photos showing that the car received a body-off restoration at some point prior to 2004.

As you can see in the photos, the car is no show queen and the bodywork has a few ripples but it appears solid both above and below. The vendor is only parting with it because he has just inherited two Lotus Elans from his uncle and does not have the space to store them all.

Starting promptly and running well as we have moved it around on site with good 50psi oil pressure, this is a good driver quality TR4 with many new parts, overdrive and a nice transferable number which is ready to enjoy.
