1986 Porsche 944

Very clean and tidy example of this classic Eighties sportscar; recent tyres, service, stainless steel exhaust and waxoil treatment; good history; ready to enjoy

Supplied new by Charles Follett of London in July 1986, this Zermatt Silver 944 is in very good condition throughout and hides its mileage extremely well with an extensive service history to show regular upkeep throughout its life. It is described by the vendor as follows:
"I bought it on a whim from an auction in December 2018, the intention being to use it as a comfortable and easy way into the classic car world, at which it has excelled. At the time I bought the car I was a garage proprietor, however I then sold my business to an employee. As a result I lost my car storage, and subsequently Covid has completely messed up plans regarding pensions and funding to buy a storage unit for myself and sadly my 944 has to go.
Having purchased the car, we got it up on a lift at work and found the bodyshell to be in amazing, rust-free condition. It appears the car has been Ziebarted in the past which has done its job exceedingly well. Nevertheless we took the opportunity to give it another thorough waxoyl, including sills, to give even further protection. All sills were found to be intact and in good condition with the correct stonechip paint, possibly renewed within the past year or two, but in the correct colour; use of a magnet found only metal.
We serviced and MOT’d the car and it has given good service since. In 2019 the car was used to visit Bicester Heritage, Brooklands, Shelsley Walsh, Goodwood etc. We’ve attended local Porsche club and classic car meets, have participated in scenic tours and economy runs and a regularity rally in Northern France in November. In 2020 we just got chance to drive to Gaydon to attend the HRCR open day in January before Covid kicked in and stopped almost everything. Since then we have only had chance to take the car out for a few sunny day runs. During 2020 the car was stored at a trade colleague’s premises which we were unable to access until later in the year.
In my brief ownership I have fitted two rear gas struts, a used boot cover, a service book wallet, given the car a service and inspection and replaced the rear tyres. In July 2017 the car had received a full service at Zuffenhausen at 150,437 miles which cost £1,300 and included new belts, fresh gearbox oil and brake fluid. A stainless steel exhaust was also fitted at around the same time.
The only failure I had was very early on when the odometer seized due to breakage of a small cog within. I had difficulty obtaining the correct cog (incorrect one received twice) resulting in approximately 2,000 miles not recorded during 2019, the odometer currently showing 153,400 miles. The car has an extensive history including handbook, service book, many invoices and most old MOT certificates and tax discs. It has a current MOT until January 2022 with no advisories recorded.
Currently the car’s fuel gauge is faulty and the heated rear window requires a repair. The dashboard has some very light cracking and the driver’s seat also has a couple of minor cracks in the vinyl. Nothing that is immediately obvious and thigs I had intended to tackle but difficulty in gaining access to the car during 2020 meant that it was not done. In 2019 I was too busy enjoying using it.
This is a lovely classic sports car to drive. The interior is unmistakable 1980’s yet being a Porsche, it does not have excessive amounts of cheap moulded plastic. The car has surprisingly firm controls (one has to check if it actually does have power assisted steering) but it is comfortable and has a perfect driving position, in my opinion. The doors close with a lovely ‘thunk’ which my 986 Boxster definitely doesn’t. In fact I do think the interior design of the 2nd generation 944 is far, far superior to the ugly interior of my Boxster. The car also has a really good heater and the heater controls are perfect.
In my view this is an ideal starter-classic for a younger driver perhaps, or a very affordable way into classic Porsche ownership. It’s nice to drive but not so much power to get into trouble. Really enjoyable motoring in my opinion, far nicer than modern cars but without the shortcomings of really old cars."
