1994 Suzuki Cappuccino

Cutesey Japanese 'Kei car' with turbocharged 3-pot 657cc engine and manual 'box; targa and full convertible options

In production from 1993 to 1995, the Cappuccino was a small car specially made by Suzuki to take advantage of the lower taxation rate for cars that met a set of rules known as the ‘Kei specs’. In order to qualify, the car needed to have an engine with a capacity no more than 660cc and conform to certain power, weight and overall size restrictions. The Cappuccino’s 660cc turbocharged engine developed 63bhp and although top speed was limited to 87mph, with just 725kgs to propel it could sprint to 60mph in 8 seconds. This light weight, combined with a mid-mounted engine, made the car a hoot to drive with go-kart responses and a rev limiter that didn’t kick in until 9,300rpm! Throw in strong brakes and a slick 5-speed gearbox and it offered about as much fun as you could have with your clothes on. The three-panel targa roof was most ingenious and offered a number of options from fully open to fully closed (the rear screen being made of glass with a built-in heating element) and the whole lot could be stowed neatly in the tiny boot, allowing for mid-journey adjustments as the weather allowed. Supplied new by F. Vindis & Sons of Peterborough in August 1994 and acquired by the vendor in 2015 from Brightwells after its previous owner had used it to tow behind his motorhome, changing the colour from its original Mercury silver to white to match his motorhome. Our vendor has enjoyed the car over the past 5 years, covering a modest 1,000 miles or so per year giving a total indicated of just under 92,000 miles. The history file includes the V5C, current MOT without advisories running to August 2021 along with nine old MOTs back to 2008. We also have the owner’s manual, owner’s manual supplement and original service book with supplying dealer stamp and 13 service stamps, the last stamped service in July 2005 at 71,649 miles. Invoices on file show the car has had non-specified welding carried out in May 2019 by Caunsall Garage of Caunsall at a cost of £940, an undated service invoice for the current vendor including brake fluid change costing £234 along with historic service invoices from its early days. Said to be great fun to drive and with a recent clean MOT it looks like a lot of fun especially when offered at No Reserve!
