1962 691XUJ BENTLEY S2 Saloon

Smart S2 with automatic transmission, power steering and air con; recent new tyres and partial repaint; refurbished interior; classic motoring at its finest

First registered in September 1960, this S2 Automatic was supplied new by Coffins of Eastbourne to Mr RM Tilling of Pullborough with the registration number JBP 1 and the desirable options of power steering and air conditioning. Exported to the USA in around 1969, it reputedly spent many years in a private collection where it was treated to a bare metal respray in the Georgian Silver over Blue paintwork that you see today.

Returning to the UK in late 2007, it was sold via Brightwells to a gentleman who handed it over to Ghost Motors for a thorough check-over in 2008 which cost £4,700 (invoice on file). He kept the car for the next nine years, covering around 3,500 miles during this period before selling it to the current owner in July 2017. He has also looked after the car well with bills on file for various jobs including: both brake master cylinders replaced; new whitewall tyres all round; door seals replaced; seats refurbished; new oil sender and oil gauge repaired and pressure checked; oil and filter changed each year, most recently in March 2019; new spark plugs in 2018; wings and doors resprayed on both sides in December 2019.

Other documentation includes an original owner’s handbook with hand-written notes recording regular servicing up to 1964 when the car had covered 47,000 miles plus records of another five services at Mann Egerton over the period 1965 – 1969 by which time it had covered 86,000 miles. There is also a US Certificate of Title from 2004 when the car was resident in St Louis, Missouri.
Now showing some 44,000 miles on the clock (presumably 144,000), the car has covered around 3,000 trouble-free miles in the current ownership and is due to be driven some 80 miles to the sale. Although it no longer needs one, it also has an MOT until February 2021.
